June 7, 2019 (Cooperstown, NY) - Fourth Grade students and faculty at Cooperstown Elementary School have been busy the past several weeks as they visited regional historic sites and studied NY State history through hands-on experience with museum and county professionals. Hanford Mills Museum: CCS 4th Grade students traveled to Hanford Mills Museum in East Meredith, NY to gain a deeper understanding of the impact of the Industrial Revolution on the communities of Central New York. CCS Students explored several buildings at the museum including the 1909 home of the Hanford Family and a wood mill powered by water. The overwhelming favorite experience was reported to be the turning of the large water wheel and the resulting power that was spread to various belts and pulleys throughout the mill. The Farmers' Museum: 19th Century daily life activities were the focus of CCS 4th Grade students during their visit to The Farmers' Museum in Cooperstown, NY. Students explored the various buildings and agriculture in the village to gain a better understanding of rural and village life through demonstrations and interpretive exhibits. Each student participated in a workshop in which they created an item from the time period of the village. A sampling of these Items include hooks forged in the blacksmith shop, pouches from a sewing class, and lip balm from the pharmacy. Otsego County Courthouse & Buildings: The Otsego County Courthouse and County Buildings visit was an opportunity for CCS 4th Grade students to learn about the work of their local government. A stop in the courtroom included a mock trial in which students were given the roles of the various individuals involved in a regular court case. Students spent some time in the 911 call center and learned about the steps taken to help community members who need emergency assistance. The students were also given the opportunity to practice putting out a fake flame, and talk about the proper steps to take should they find themselves in an emergency situation. Finally, the children acted as county representatives while on a stop in the County Board room, and learned about the steps taken to both discuss and vote on legislation. With great appreciation for all that our regional historic sites offer, the CCS 4th Grade Faculty of Nina Burke, Susan Clark, and Ann Reis thank all of those involved in our recent immersion trips.

Kid Garden is a collaboration between Cooperstown Central School and the Cooperstown community. The CCS District garden serves as a living project that reaps benefits for CCS students and staff, adult volunteers and the community-at-large by providing wholesome produce to area food pantries. Kid Garden cultivates learning in a healthy outdoor environment and teachers are encouraged to use this space whenever possible for instruction. CCS is proud to support Kid Garden and thanks Kristin Griger, along with the many volunteers who help keep our garden growing, learning and producing throughout the year.
