CCS Elementary School celebrates independent reading as students choose a book they enjoy, write a review and share it with the entire school during morning announcements. Last week, CCS 5th-Grader Luke Miosek shared his review of Lost Boy by Tim Green, nominating a kindergartener to share the next Mindful Reader Book Review with students and staff. Thursday, January 9, 2020 (Cooperstown, NY) - CCS 7th and 8th Grade Students participated in National History Day (NHD) yesterday at CCS. NHD is a research project competition which challenges students to research, create, edit and revise, produce a final project, and present to a group of judges. The long-term inquiry project, done individually, with a group, or as part of a class, teaches students research and presentation skills. The tenacity needed to complete the project over a period of time and continually revise and improve the product benefits them as students and helps develop the life-long skills needed to be successful in any profession. John Brotherton, CCS 8th grade social studies teacher, Zachary Williams, CCS 7th grade social studies teacher, and Michelle Hitchcock, CCS librarian, guide students with their projects based on the NHD annual theme. Local winners are invited to participate at a regional NHD competition and winners at the regional level will move on to NY State competition. For more information, contact jbrotherton@cooperstowncs.org or mhitchcock@cooperstowncs.org, or visit http://nyshistoryday.org/.

CCS 4th-Grade students are now accomplished film creators. During a project in art and library classes, students studied traditional Native American storytelling and created their own original stories. To make the tales come to life, students turned their stories into scripts, made paper characters, props and backgrounds. With the help of Caitlin Cook-Wightman, Cooperstown Elementary School art teacher and Emily Gibson, Cooperstown Elementary School library media specialist, students produced the final stop motion animation shorts using an iPad app. The final projects are fantastic examples of student collaboration, creativity and technology integration in art, literature and social studies. For more information, please contact egibson@cooperstowncs.org or ccook-wightman@cooperstowncs.org. Check out our CCS 4th Grade work at http://bit.ly/grade4lib.

CCS 7th Grade students joined CCS Health Education Teacher, Molly Toulson, for the annual “Cardiac UpClose” information session at Bassett Healthcare Network where students gained an understanding of heart health and how lifestyle choices impact their health. CCS Faculty Angela Eldred and Deb Miller also joined the class for this unique opportunity to learn more about cardiac health. CCS students and staff conducted break-out sessions that utilized diagrams and models, dissected sugar drinks and analyzed the effects of smoking on the heart . Students were also provided the opportunity to witness cardiac surgery (via video) as well as listen to the story of a cardiac surgery patient. CCS thanks Bassett Healthcare Network for this unique opportunity to take health education out of the classroom and into the field.
