CCS Elementary Science Teacher Erik Hanson adapted to changes in remote learning and switched up units to Astronomy as he leveraged technology and provided students with the opportunity to make simple models at home and dig deeper into concept learning. Students were exposed to a number of computer simulations to understand how the Earth’s rotation affects us here on the planet and how the tilt of the Earth is the biggest factor in creating the seasons. CCS students made shadow clocks, or sundials, and investigated how the sun’s path in the sky can be used to tell time. Students also made the “Universe in a Box'' which helped students understand Earth’s orbit around the sun and how and why it affects the constellations we can see in the night sky. Through the use of technology in this study, students were introduced to a number of apps and websites to help in identifying different constellations in the night sky. Science rocks with Mr. Hanson! Students in CCS Science Teacher Jennifer Yanisko’s classes presented their projects on elements of the periodic table (8th grade) and the science behind earthquakes and volcanoes (9th grade). Yanisko shook up learning in her classes as we jumped into the New Year. Students chose a topic from the next unit, researched the topic using resources provided through Michelle Hitchcock’s Library Media Resources online, developed individual Google Slides presentations, and presented to peers about everything they learned. Students in Physical Science researched chlorine, sodium, mercury, neo and other elements of the periodic table, while others in Unified Science studied the origins and effects of volcanoes and earthquakes. A reminder of the Hybrid Bell Schedule that will be followed at CCS Jr./Sr. High School beginning tomorrow, January 19, 2021. Have you ever played the art game with a friend where participants take turns writing or drawing on a sheet of paper, folding it to conceal your contribution, and then passing it to the next player for a further contribution? Mrs. Cook-Wightman brought this game to life with CCS Jr./Sr. High School Art students and shook up the tedium of online learning. Cook-Wightman shared a Google Drawings document with students, assigned them a body part for their class character, and then all students added their contribution at the same time. Some students were proficient in Google Drawings and others were learning the program as they played the game. There was no shortage of laughter and creativity. Way to go Mrs. Cook-Wightman, shaking up learning and having fun with students. Let’s Go Hawkeyes!

CCS Families K-6: Elementary School photos for students K-6 have arrived and are available for pick-up at the Elementary School. They will be available outside the front doors today (Friday, January 8, 2021) until 6pm and then again all day on Monday beginning at 7:30am. Cooperstown Central School reminds all students in Grades 7-12 that attendance is required in ALL live Zoom classes during remote learning, including Physical Education, Art and Music classes listed in student schedules. Attendance is taken each period and classroom attendance is compulsory, required by law. Thursday, January 7, 2021 (Cooperstown, NY) - The day after the historic events that took place in Washington D.C., CCS History Teacher Jenn Pindar embraced her time with students during remote learning today to talk through the events, listen to each other and find perspective in history. Pindar provided an objective review of yesterday’s events as we understand them at this point in time and encouraged students to share how they learned of the events and what they feel is significant about these events. Pindar encouraged students to stay involved, keep paying attention to current events and recognize sources of information. Pindar finished up class by saying, “I’m proud of all of you. We talked about these events, we shared opinions and reflected on what has happened. You listened to each other and you were respectful.”
