Recognized for Making a Lasting Difference in the Lives of Students
Albany, NY – July 2025 — ASBO New York is proud to announce Amy Kukenberger, Assistant Superintendent for Business and Operations at Cooperstown Central School District, as the recipient of the 2025 Dr. Joan Colvin Starfish Award. The honor was presented at the Education Summit and Awards Luncheon in June, where Dr. Joan Colvin, past president and founder of the award, personally assisted in the presentation.
Named for Dr. Colvin, who served as ASBO New York’s president from 2000–2001, the Starfish Award is given to a School Business Official who has “made a difference” in the lives of students through exemplary financial stewardship, dedication to advancing student learning, and meaningful community engagement. In addition to the professional recognition, the award includes a $1,000 scholarship to a high school senior in the recipient’s district, generously donated by Dr. Colvin.
With a career rooted in student-centered service, Amy Kukenberger exemplifies the spirit of the award. Beginning as a science teacher, Amy taught for 14 years before transitioning into leadership roles including Principal, Treasurer, and eventually Assistant Superintendent, all at Cooperstown CSD. Her enduring commitment to the district is matched by her belief that financial decisions must always answer the question: “What’s best for kids?” Throughout her tenure, Amy has implemented numerous initiatives that reflect this guiding principle.
Amy’s impact extends beyond her district. She is a regional leader and mentor to fellow business officials, often sharing her knowledge on long-range planning, state reporting, and financial communication. She is also an educator, lending her voice to leadership development through principal pipeline programs and regional workshops.
Community engagement is another hallmark of her work. From securing funding for educational enhancements to facilitating partnerships that enrich learning, Amy’s contributions consistently elevate opportunities for students and families. As one colleague shared, “Her thoughtful support helped my child access after-school programming that made it possible for my family to remain in the district, a personal example of her unwavering advocacy.”
ASBO New York congratulates Amy Kukenberger for her exemplary leadership, compassion, and vision. Her work makes a lasting difference, one student at a time.
