Cooperstown Board of Education Appoints John Evans as Acting Superintendent

May 4, 2026
COOPERSTOWN—The Cooperstown Central School District Board of Education has appointed John Evans to serve as acting superintendent during Superintendent Sarah Spross’s indefinite leave of absence due to a family emergency.

The Board approved the appointment during a special session on Monday, May 4, 2026. Evans will serve in the role effective immediately and will remain in place for the duration of Superintendent Spross’s leave. He will provide leadership for the District and work with the Board of Education, administrators, faculty, and staff to ensure continuity of district operations, instructional programs, student services, and ongoing initiatives.

“First and foremost, our thoughts are with Superintendent Spross and her family during this time,” said Board of Education President Pete Iorizzo. “The Board’s action ensures that Cooperstown Central School District has experienced leadership in place while Superintendent Spross is away. We are confident that Mr. Evans will provide steady guidance and support for our students, staff, families, and school community.”
Evans is a retired superintendent with decades of experience in public education leadership, District operations, governance, and regional collaboration. He has served school communities in Sullivan and Delaware counties and has worked closely with district leaders, Boards of Education, and BOCES partners throughout his career.

In addition to his experience as a superintendent, Evans has provided leadership and consultation in areas including strategic planning, shared services, district reorganization studies, and cross-district collaboration. His professional background includes service with the New York State Council of School Superintendents, the New York State Rural Schools Association, and the Mid-Hudson School Study Council.

The appointment of an acting superintendent is a standard governance measure that provides a clear leadership structure when a superintendent is temporarily unavailable. During this period, the District will continue to operate as usual, with administrators, faculty, and staff maintaining their focus on students, families, and the daily work of the schools.

The District will share any necessary updates with the school community at the appropriate time while respecting Superintendent Spross’s privacy and the privacy of her family. The Board of Education appreciates the continued support and understanding of the Cooperstown school community during this time.
