Thursday, February 11, 2021 (Cooperstown, NY) -  “Persist, keep working at it, apply yourself to your dream and don’t let others tell you it can’t be done. In life you should surround yourself with people who will blow oxygen on your spark. Don’t give up!”  - author Wendelin Van Draanen

CCS Jr./Sr. High School Library Media Specialist Michelle Hitchcock welcomed our 2021 virtual visiting author today for CCS students to enjoy either via Zoom from home or together in the cafeteria after school. Wendelin Van Draanen, whose parents immigrated from the Netherlands, treated students to an entertaining afternoon of how she became a writer, the challenges she worked to overcome, how her stories developed, and what she has in store for the future.

Van Draanen talked to students about her experiences growing up and how she worked hard to persevere through difficult times to publish her first book after 10 years of rejections from publishers. With the successful publishing of over 30 novels in multiple languages for young readers and teens, Van Draanen shared countless stories about how she created her characters and developed her stories. Students were treated to numerous stories and thoughtful advice.

Van Draanen shared her experiences about the importance of coming back from your darkest hour and persisting in life. CCS students also had an opportunity to ask questions. For more information about Van Draanen’s literature, visit her website at Many thanks to Michelle Hitchcock for bringing this opportunity to our CCS students.
