CCS Music Teacher Tim Iversen’s 7th Grade class created an “Influence Tree” this month. Students selected a contemporary artist whose music they admire and traced back their influences like a family tree, selecting two additional artists who influenced each artist through five “generations.” For each artist, students researched the characteristics of their music and listened to some of the artist’s most popular songs, recognizing how one artist influences another. Iversen designed this project to introduce students to new artists they may not have heard before and brought students a perspective on music history. Students also learned how some artists had a wide-spread influence over many other later musicians in history.
