What are the Academic Intervention Services?

Through a federally funded grant called Title I, Cooperstown Central School receives funds to help pay for remedial staff who assist students who are experiencing academic difficulties in reading and math.  These students are usually not considered Special Education students.

How do students qualify for Academic Intervention Services(AIS)?

Students in grades 3 through 8 are given the New York State English Language Arts and Math tests each year in the spring.  Students who receive a score of 2 or below on this test qualify to have remedial services.  Also, all students in grades K-8 are screened for literacy and math skills three times each year.  Students who fall below local norms on these tests may also qualify for AIS.  Report card grade averages of D or below may also qualify a student for AIS.  Teachers may recommend students for these services because of poor classroom performance.

How do I know if my child is included in the AIS program?

Parents or guardians are notified by letter that their child qualifies to receive these services.

What does the remedial service look like for my child?

This may vary according to the needs of the student.  Most students receive remedial services from our remedial teachers in a small group setting outside of the classroom.  Some of the services are given within the classroom setting if this is appropriate for the student.  The usual time for remedial sessions is about 30 minutes.  There may be two, three or more sessions per week, depending on the needs for each student.

How long will my child receive these remedial services?

A student continues to be included in the program until that student receives a 3 or 4 on either of the New York State tests that he or she scored 2 or below on previously.  Some students are released from the program when they receive a consistent C or above in the targeted subject area on their report cards.  Subsequent school wide screenings which indicate significant growth in the targeted subject areas also may qualify the students to be discontinued from the program.

Classroom teachers and the remedial teachers are in constant communication about the progress of these students.  Parents may discuss the progress of the students at anytime with the remedial teachers and the classroom teacher to determine what course of action should be taken for the academic support of their child.

 Who are the AIS teachers?

Currently, our AIS Staff includes:

·         Betsy O’Brien is a remedial reading, writing and math teacher in the Elementary School

       bobrien@cooperstowncs.org

·         Mary Tedesco is a remedial reading, writing, and math teacher in the Elementary School

       mtedesco@cooperstowncs.org

·         Stephanie Nelen is a remedial reading and writing teacher in the morning at the  Elementary School and in the afternoon at the Middle School

      snelen@cooperstowncs.org

Some classroom teachers may provide AIS remediation in specific subject areas either in their classrooms or in a separate setting.

How may I contact an AIS teacher?

All AIS teachers may be contacted by sending a note with the student, calling the school or sending an e-mail to that teacher (see e-mail addresses above).

Our District disseminates, free of charge, information about the State Complaint and Appeal Procedures to parents of students enrolled in AIS/Title One.  Copies of the appeal procedure are on file in the Elementary and District offices and may be secured upon request.
