Clubs and Activities

What clubs or activities are available for my student?

Check below to see the vast selection of possible choices to enhance your child’s learning and social experiences here at Cooperstown Central School. You can email the advisor directly if you would like more information or if would be interested to assist as a parent volunteer. This list is continuously evolving, so check back frequently.

Art Club

Contact: Ms. Krause

When do you meet? Wednesdays after school

What grades are involved? 7-12

What is your purpose? To further explore and learn about past, current, future art and media trends.  There is a bus available at 4 p.m. to take students home, without the need for parent pickup.

Battle of the Books/Library Club

Advisor: Mrs. Hitchcock

When do you meet? During the school day and after school

What grades are involved? 7-12

What is your purpose? This group runs the school store, assists with the elementary Family Reading Night to kick off PARP and annual Battle of the Books competitions. Students meet for book discussions and planning sessions during the school year. Members of Battle of the Books are placed in teams of 4 to read and prepare for the annual competition. They should be able to identify the title and the author of the books depending on the question or statement given. The winning local team “battles” the winners from other districts at the annual competition in March.


Advisor: Mrs. Parr

When do you meet? Meetings start in the fall to prepare students for the Leatherstocking Envirothon competition held in late April.

What grades are involved? 9-12

What is your purpose? Envirothon is designed to introduce students to environmental topics and their application including wildlife, soil sciences, aquatic ecology, forestry/land use and current events. Two teams of five students represent our school at an outdoor competitive event with challenges at six stations including a team presentation to a panel of judges. Awards and a trip to the state level are contingent upon winning. The event is offered by the Otsego Soil and Water Conservation District.

High School Musical

Advisor: Mr. Iversen

When do you meet? Every Night in the Fall 6 p.m.9 p.m. or  7 p.m.10 p.m.

What grades are involved? 8-12

What is your purpose? Students perform a musical once a year in November. Auditions are held in the fall, listen for announcements.

High School Student Council

Advisor: Mrs. Merwin

When do you meet? Usually during 5th or 7th period lunch

What grades are involved? 9-12. Each class elects two representatives. Class officers are nominated and elected in mid-May. Interested members apply during late May. At this time, elected officers review applications and accept up to 16 members.

What Is your Purpose? Oversee numerous student activities which include but are not limited to; Homecoming, Christmas gifts to head start students, assist with beautification of school, Red Cross drives, dances, Project Prom, AlDS awareness activities and graduation.

Identity Alliance

Advisors: Mrs. Leinhart and Mrs. Burk-Sciallo

What grades are involved? 7-12

What Is your Purpose? –

Junior High School Newspaper

Advisor: Mrs. Merwin

When do you meet? During and after school

What grades are involved? 7-8

What is your purpose? The Jr. High School newspaper will produce four newspapers. All Jr. High School students interested in journalism, graphic layouts, creating cartoons, photography or being a part of the newspaper staff are welcome to join.

Junior Jazz Rock Band

Advisor: Mr. Daum

When do you meet? Fridays 6:45 a.m. – 7:45 a.m.

What grades are involved? 6-8

What is your purpose? The group has several performances during the school year. Rehearsals include the preparation of jazz repertoire for performance and the study of instrumental improvisation. Students can sign up during the first couple weeks of school. Students will be accepted based upon the number of students that apply and the availability of openings for particular instruments. Student may be asked to audition to demonstrate their ability. The rehearsal schedule will be e-mailed to those that apply.

Literary Magazine

Advisor: Mrs. Pudlewski

When do you meet? After school

What grades are involved? 7-8

What is your purpose? Students edit and publish a magazine of stories and poems written by their classmates. The magazine also includes student artwork.

Media Team

Advisor: Mrs. Gardner

When do you meet? Students can participate all year long as they wish. Meetings are generally scheduled after school and around specific projects (i.e. the fall musical or senior play).

What grades are involved? 7-12

What is your purpose? To promote education in the media creation and broadcast fields. Students learn how to operate audio and video equipment and the creation of media for the web and other communications mediums.

National History Day

Advisor: Mrs. Hitchcock and Mr. Brotherton

When do you meet? TBD

What grades are involved? 7-12

National Honor Society

Advisor: Mrs. Wolfe

When do you meet? Students meet a few times a year.

What grades are involved? 11th and 12th grade students

What is your purpose? Students who have earned an 92.5 average or higher will be contacted in March to apply. There is an interview and an application process. Students are selected based upon their GPA, character, leadership and community service. Inductions are held once a year in Spring.

Odyssey of the Mind

Advisor: Ms. Summers

When do you meet? After school, from Sept.-Feb. A letter is sent home in the fall.

What grades are involved? K-12; anyone can join.

What is your purpose? Local volunteers help students apply their creativity to solve problems. Students present their solutions in official competitions.

Outward Bound

Advisor: Mr. Smith

When do you meet? Students must attend the Outward Bound Meeting held in January and fill out application form.

What grades are involved? 9-12

What is your purpose? To give students an opportunity to challenge themselves mentally and physically. Activities/fundraisers are accomplished through Community Service projects. Outward Bound is sponsored by the Clark Foundation

High School Quiz Team

Advisor: Mr. Iversen

When do you meet? Third week of September for team tryouts and various other dates throughout the year for practices and competitions. Team membership requires after-school and weekend participation.

What grades are involved? 9-12

What is your purpose? To compete against other schools for academic honors, students must try-out for the team.

Rotary International Exchange Program

Advisor: Mr. Geertgens

When do you meet? Accepted students meet four times at the Rotary District level before departure

What grades are involved? 9-11

What is your purpose? Students are immersed into the culture and life of another country for one year. There is an informational meeting offered for anyone interested in September. Please listen for the announcements. There is an application process and Interview that follows. Students are notified if they are accepted in October/November.

SADD (Students Against Destructive Decisions)

Advisor: Mrs. Wolfe

When do you meet? Usually before school

What grades are involved? 9-12; Officers are elected the third week in September.

What Is your Purpose? To provide safe activities for the student body. Activities include, but are not limited to: Red Ribbon Month, Easter egg hunt for elementary students, candy grams during Halloween, participate in April road race in Oneonta and assist with Relay for Life. Sponsored events include providing dinner before musicals and holiday packages to former students in the service. Shamrock Hunt at the high school and a co-ed volleyball tournament.

High School Science Olympiad

Advisor: Mrs. Davis

When do you meet? After school

What grades are involved? 9-12

What is your purpose? To compete against other schools for academic honors.

*All Interested students may participate but some team competitions have a limited space.

Senior Jazz Rock Band

Advisor: Mr. Iversen

When do you meet? Monday 6:30 p.m. – 7:45 p.m.

What grades are involved? Grades 9-12 are welcome to audition. Auditions are held In September.

What is your purpose? The purpose is to teach appreciation of jazz music and Carl Strommen. Students also develop their musical skills and improvisation is highly encouraged. We play three school concerts per year plus various locales both locally and in Albany. Students can start by seeing the advisor and letting him know they are interested the first week in September, Auditions are the second week Rehearsals start the third week for students called back from the auditions. No fees required.

Senior Jazz Rock & Vocal Harmonia

Advisor: Ms. Hogle

When do you meet? Weekly all year; before school

What grades are involved? 9-12; By Audition

* Co-requisite students must be enrolled in Concert Choir or Mixed Chorus

What is your purpose? Performance of Rock jazz and other small ensemble choral music, there are eight to 10 performances per year

Senior Play

Advisors: Mrs. Leinhart and Mrs. Burk-Sciallo

When do you meet? Every Night in March 6 p.m.9 p.m.

What grades are involved? 12th grade by audition. Listen for announcements.

What is your purpose? Seniors perform once a year in the spring.

Ski Club

Advisor: Mr. Hobbie

When do you meet? Winter months, see Mr. Hobbie for schedule.

What grades are involved? 7-12

What is your purpose? Ski on various slopes, including learning the basics and proper methods.

Varsity C

Advisor: Mr. Peplinski

When do you meet? Periodically throughout the year. Officers are elected in the Fall.

What grades are involved? 9-12; Varsity Athletes.

What is your purpose? Raise money for Cooperstown Varsity Sports

Yearbook Club

Advisor: Ms. Schallert

When do you meet? During and after school

What grades are involved? 9-12

What is your purpose? To develop, create, and sell the Cooperstown Jr./Sr. High School Yearbook.  Check out our Google Site for more information!
