Jr./Sr. High School Conducts Precautionary Lockdown

The purpose of this message is to inform you of an incident that occurred at Cooperstown Jr./Sr. High School on Tuesday, Dec. 5. and to reiterate our firm commitment to the safety and security of students and staff.

On Tuesday morning, the Jr./Sr. High School administration was made aware of a .22 caliber rimfire round found outside the auditorium. Although there was no known threat, the school immediately went into lockdown and state police were notified.

The lockdown lasted for about an hour as administration and state police with a K-9 unit swept and secured the building. No additional items were found. All students and staff followed the lockdown policy as per district policy.

There is nothing more important than the safety of our students and staff. The district conducts periodic drills to cover a variety of scenarios, including fires and threats to the school building. The district’s policies are continually reviewed to ensure they are effective.
